Mayo Gaels captured the Flanagan Cup when, in front of a large attendance, they defeated Balla in Abbey Park on Saturday evening the 5th of April.

The final result indicates a comfortable win however Mayo Gaels were pushed hard for the majority of the game by a spirited Balla side and it was only in the final quarter that the lads were able to significantly extend their lead on the scoreboard.

The first quarter was a fast and furious affair with both teams struggling to gain control on proceedings however by the end of the half the Balla defense was coming under increased pressure chiefly due to the growing influence of Sean Boyle and Paul Walsh at midfield coupled with the strong runs from deep by Alan Morris and Kevin Lynch. Inspirational points, just before the break, from Liam Duggan and Mally Byrne gave the Gaels a confidence boosting lead of 0.06 to 0.02 at the interval.

Mayo Gaels superior fitness began to tell in the second half and, despite strong resistance from the Balla defense, the team began to stretch their lead. The Gaels closed out the game strongly and in the final minutes several well executed Gaels attacks resulted in excellent points from play from John Sloyne, Tony Byrne, Mally Byrne and Daniel Burke.
