Mayo Gaels secured a valuable win over Davitts in the first round of the O’Mara Cup played in a wet and windy Ballindine on Sunday the 6th of April.

Showing no ill effects from playing the Flanagan Cup final on the previous evening Mayo Gaels quickly adapted to the poor playing conditions and were in control for the majority of the match – indeed the winning margin should have been greater had the Gaels managed to convert a greater share of the many scoring opportunities created (13 wides in total…).

The Mayo Gaels defense and midfield dominated a dour first half however poor shooting by the forwards (- not helped by a strong cross field wind) meant that this superiority wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard with the result that the Gaels were only ahead by one point at the interval (0.03 to 0.02).

Davitts edged into the lead (0.05 to 0.04) ten minutes into the second half however the Gaels upped the pressure and the decisive score of the game came when a long passing range move, started by Kevin Lynch, saw the same player collect the final pass to unleash an unstoppable shot from twenty meters to the Davitts net. Minutes later Paul Walsh again finished to the net after another counter-attack to increase the lead to five points. Despite having several further scoring opportunities in the final minutes the Gaels only added one more point (a Niall Brett free) to their tally.

Overall it was a committed, disciplined display from the Mayo Gaels lads with Shane Vahey, Fintan Canavan, Kevin Jordan, Sean Boyle, Paul Walsh, Niall Brett and Kevin Lynch delivering strong performances on the day.

The Senior’s will play Kilmaine in the second round of the O’Mara Cup in Abbey Park next Saturday the 12th of March at 6.00 pm.
