2014 Flanagan Cup Tournament : All the Thrills and Spills ….

posted 8 Apr 2014, 23:09 by Mayo Gaels

Large crowds attended the final day of the Flanagan Cup Tournament in Abbey Park on Saturday the 5th of April.

The Shield final between Kilmovee Shamrocks and Eastern Gaels started at 5.30pm and anyone who anticipated a friendly challenge between the East Mayo rivals were in for a shock as both teams started the game at a frantic pace and it was clear from early on that we were going to be treated to a thriller. Referee Gerry Lohan was the busiest man in the park as he at times struggled to keep control on what turned out to be a very exciting and action packed second half. Kilmovee dramatically leveled with the last kick of the game to tie the scores at 1.08 to 0.11. A replay date has yet to be confirmed.

In the Cup Final Mayo Gaels defeated Balla by 0.14 to 0.04 in what was, despite the eventual score line, a fast paced and competitive encounter (report below).

During the presentation ceremony club Chairman Stephen Murphy thanked the players, management and supporters from the Balla, Eastern Gaels & Kilmovee clubs for participating in this year’s tournament. Stephen stated that the gate receipts from this year’s tournament will be forwarded to the ‘Night for Ella’ benefit fund – supporters were very generous over the two weekends and he thanked all for their contributions and good wishes. Stephen stated that there was a strong link between the club and the Flanagan family and he thanked Dermot Flanagan and his family for their attendance and for their continual support of the tournament.

Dermot Flanagan stated that he and his family were always delighted with the welcome they received in Mayo Abbey. Dermot was impressed with the football on view and wished all clubs the best in the year ahead. Dermot then presented the Flanagan Cup to Mayo Gaels Captain Allyn Brett. Allyn thanked the Mayo Gael’s lads for their commitment and dedication this year and he also thanked Balla for a sporting game and for supporting the tournament down through the years.

After the presentations a large crowd assembled in the clubhouse for refreshments (……and afterwards also headed to Malachy’s for extra refreshments !!!) – all in all a great end to a great day.
