[12/05/14] U16’s : Mayo Gaels defeated by Charlestown in Division 3 League Final

Mayo Gaels suffered a heavy defeat to Charlestown (9:10 to 3:10) in the Division 3 League final in McHale Park, Castlebar on Monday the 12th of May.

A tired Mayo Gaels, who played three U16 matches in the past week, were always struggling to compete against a strong Charlestown team whose dominance at midfield caused the Gaels untold problems throughout the game.

The game was relatively competitive in a first half with both sets of forwards having the upper hand on their direct opponents. The half-time score was Charlestown 5:05, Mayo Gaels 1:08 – with Mayo Gaels failure to effectively deal with Charlestown’s long ball to their full-forward line the essential difference between the sides.

Mayo Gaels made several positional switches at the interval however try as they might the Gaels were unable to break Charlestown’s grip in midfield and the East Mayo team were deserving winners at the final whistle.

The young Mayo Gaels side battled manfully at all times and had fine performances from John Gallagher, Francis Regan, Ross Burke, Fintan McGurrin and Ronan Commons.

Mayo Gaels have had a very good League campaign – injuries have been an issue this season however the lads put together a great end of league run and the team can look forward with confidence to the Summer Championship.
